In the 1990s, a flood audit of downtown properties was completed which resulted in a to-do list for commercial buildings. However, presently, only two retailers have implemented flood prevention measures. DPIC is coordinating with P&Z to approach tenants, which have not done any flood prevention, and discuss possibilities and general emergency preparedness.
In order to continue to upgrade stormwater infrastructure, three grant applications were submitted to the Connecticut Department of Housing. Westport was awarded $650,000 to complete two of the projects. One hundred percent of the grants are federally funded and no town contribution is required. Of the total awarded, $250,000 is earmarked for a study of Dead Man’s Brook. The remaining $400,000 is to be used to to conduct a master drainage plan study, which has not been done since 1970s. A third application, to perform a flood audit for Downtown, is still outstanding.
